Apollo Space Program samples in hip hop music?
hi, I'm on a maillist which discusses EDM and one of the members/list managers, Graham St
John (an Australian scholar who has compiled a few books on EDM) has asked about origins of samples from the Apollo Space mission in music. he's
asking specifically about dance related music but the discussion has brought up Sun Ra's name. so I was wondering if any of the sample gurus here
know of any other examples/history along hip hop / funk /soul / electro (80s, not 2000s) lines which might help plot the history deeper? (the
discussion then went onto alien imagery at some psytrance events but that's another topic)
here's the initial request from Graham St John :
"I'm attempting to trace the appeal of Apollo Space Program dialogue in EDM. I've been tracing this development in Goa/psytrance to Astral
Projection and and I don't really go further back than Juno Reactor, but I'd be surprised if Apollo mission dialogue was not sampled by Detroit
techno artists in the eighties, with the use or repurposing of the new audio devices roughly coinciding it seems with NASAs launch of the first
African American (male) into space in 1983 (and probably a range of influential arcade games). This was of course after the wholly white Apollo
Program had finished."
"Appreciated if anyone has insights on this or on the presence of such dialogue in other EDM genres such as electro, euro-trance, trancecore,
hardhouse and progressive trance."
thanks

yeah, sorry. I should have written it out (did this in the twitter post)
he's after psytrance/edm but I think the hip hop styles might pre-date these and the guys here might know their samples better so I thought it was
worth asking around. (going from conversations with some hip hop guys I know compared to dance music)

that's ok frenzie, if you think of anything let me know
I started a blog post to keep track of the replies from different places : http://tinyurl.com/dzc4co
I pulled out my old localizer book & did some searches - have just been watching "we call it techno" doco and they've played a few of the old
acid house, technohouse tracks with some spacey samples + had details of the german clubs with spacey names / links (ufo, cyberspace, dorian gray etc)
so these might help him.
